Literal meaning: “Sit on a mountain and watch tigers fight”

Real meaning: Staying calm and waiting while others argue or compete — instead of jumping in

  • 山 (shān) = mountain

  • 观 (guān) = to watch

  • 虎 (hǔ) = tiger

  • 斗 (dòu) = to fight

  • 狐狸 (hú li) = fox
