Hi friends,
Today we’re revisiting Obi’s question about counting in Chinese! We’ll go beyond the basics and explore how big numbers work, plus hear a hilarious story about a kid who thought he mastered numbers after learning to write 一二 三.
I included illustrations of the various numbers below in case you want them for practice.
Did you know that in Chinese culture, eight or 八 (bā) is considered a lucky number because it sounds like 发 (fā), to get rich? Meanwhile, 四 (sì) is considered unlucky, because it sounds like 死 (sǐ), death.
So maybe that’s why I like the number 三 (sān), it kind of sounds like 饭 (fàn) which means food.
Have a great day, folks!
