Episode 26: More Numbers

How many lines to write ten thousand?

Hi friends,

Today we’re revisiting Obi’s question about counting in Chinese! We’ll go beyond the basics and explore how big numbers work, plus hear a hilarious story about a kid who thought he mastered numbers after learning to write 一二 三.

I included illustrations of the various numbers below in case you want them for practice.

Did you know that in Chinese culture, eight or (bā) is considered a lucky number because it sounds like (fā), to get rich? Meanwhile, (sì) is considered unlucky, because it sounds like (sǐ), death.

So maybe that’s why I like the number (sān), it kind of sounds like (fàn) which means food.

Have a great day, folks!
